CHICAGO – The University of Chicago swimming and diving teams began their competitive schedules with a quad meet versus Northwestern University, University of Illinois-Chicago and Olivet Nazarene University on Saturday.
In the dual meet scoring, the Maroon men and women both went 1-2 with victories against Olivet Nazarene University.
The day's top performers were all newcomers as three freshmen combined to win four races. Aaron Guo broke the men's school record in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:34.87. His winning time shattered the previous record by more than six seconds (9:41.07). Reona Yamaguchi was a multiple winner in the 100-yard breaststroke (56.82) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.64). For the women, Nicole Garcia was victorious in the 100-yard butterfly with a mark of 57.67.
Senior Maya Scheidl was runner-up in three different races – the 50-yard freestyle, the 100-yard freestyle and as part of the 400-yard freestyle relay. Freshman Taye Baldinazzo was second in both the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle.
