CHICAGO – Reona Yamaguchi set a new school record in the 100-yard breaststroke for the University of Chicago swimming and diving teams at day three of the 2017 University Athletic Association (UAA) Swimming & Diving Championships on Friday.
In the team rankings, Emory University holds the lead over the eight-team field with 1,270 points for the women and 1,181.5 points for the men. UChicago's women are currently third with 973 points and the men are fourth with 798.5 points.
The freshman Yamaguchi provided the day's big highlight by breaking the school record in the 100-yard breaststroke. He took second place in the race in a time of 54.22.
All told, UChicago achieved All-UAA distinction in six different races. Senior Alison Wall was runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.21. The women's 800-yard freestyle relay – sophomore Naomy Grand'Pierre, Wall, senior Cara LoPiano, sophomore Hannah Eastman – was also a second-place finisher in 7:35.45. The women's 200-yard medley relay captured third (1:44.49) with the quartet of junior Melissa Bischoff, sophomore Christina Cheng, freshman Nicole Garcia and senior Maya Scheidl.
Additionally, Maroon swimmers recorded six performances that were good enough to qualify for last year's NCAA Division III Championship meet:
