Men’s Tennis NCAA Regional Preview (May 11-13)

CHICAGO – The University of Chicago men's tennis team hosts a five-team NCAA Division III Championship Regional this weekend. The Maroons received a first-round bye and open action on Saturday morning.

#7 UChicago Maroons

  • Season record: 16-4 overall / 3-0 University Athletic Association (UAA)
  • NCAA appearances: 6
  • Last NCAA appearance: Reached NCAA Third Round (2017)
  • Notes: UChicago qualified for its fourth-straight NCAA postseason. The Maroons earned an automatic bid after winning the UAA Championship for the first time in program history, topping Emory University 7-2 … Six players earned UAA All-Tournament honors after a dominant showing that featured wins of 9-0 over New York University, 8-1 against Carnegie Mellon University and 7-2 versus Emory. First-year Jeremy Yuan was named Tournament Co-MVP after posting a 6-0 record between singles and doubles … The No. 2 doubles partnership of sophomore Tyler Raclin and Yuan has posted a 22-1 record against Division III opponents this season … The Maroons have an 8-3 record against top-15 teams this season … UChicago reached the NCAA semifinals in 2015 and 2016.


Augustana Vikings

  • Last NCAA appearance: NCAA debut
  • Notes: The Vikings claimed the CCIW's automatic bid after winning the conference tournament for the first time. It was the program's 23rd CCIW championship, but first since 1985 ... Augustana defeated Elmhurst College (5-0), Carthage College (5-2) and Wheaton College (5-1) to win the CCIW … Seniors Samuel Totten and Eric Pohl, both All-CCIW selections, are the winningest doubles combination in program history with a 67-36 record … At the top of the lineup, Totten has career records of 60-40 in singles and 75-41 in doubles, ranking it a tie for sixth and second, respectively, in program history. His 135 total wins currently rank fourth in program history.


John Carroll Blue Streaks

  • Season Record: 12-8 overall / 8-0 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC)
  • NCAA appearances: 4
  • Last NCAA appearance: Reached NCAA Second Round (2017)
  • Notes: John Carroll captured the OAC Championship for the fourth-consecutive season … The Blue Streaks trailed 3-0 in the conference final, but rallied after a rain delay to defeat University of Mount Union 5-3 … John Carroll has won 31-consecutive conference matches, a streak which dates back to 2015 … Sophomore Gustavo Garcia, who plays at No. 1, earned First Team All-OAC honors last year in his first season of intercollegiate competition … Junior David Sinense has twice been named First Team All-OAC … Senior Tyler Cole sports a team-best career singles record of 54-25.


No. 9 Carnegie Mellon Tartans

  • Season Record: 14-7 overall / 1-2 University Athletic Association (UAA)
  • NCAA appearances: 6
  • Last NCAA appearance: Reached NCAA Third Round (2016)
  • Notes: The Tartans were awarded an at-large bid after placing fourth at the UAA Championships … The Tartans have beaten eight nationally-ranked opponents this season… Junior Daniel Levine, ranked second nationally, leads the way for the Tartans at No. 1 singles and doubles … Levine was named co-MVP of the UAA Championship after defeating three nationally-ranked opponents. He boasts a 24-6 singles record this year … Carnegie Mellon's squad has finished in the top 20 of the ITA national rankings every year since 2007 … Freshman Ray Boppana is ranked 20th nationally and finished as runner-up of ITA Regional to teammate Levine.


Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers

  • Season Record: 17-10 overall / 7-0 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC)
  • NCAA appearances: 4
  • Last NCAA appearance: Reached NCAA Second Round (2017)
  • Notes: Rose-Hulman won the HCAC tournament to earn the conference's automatic qualifying spot for the fourth-straight season. The squad beat Earlham College 5-2 in the final … RHIT has not lost in conference play since 2014, winning 39-consecutive matches against HCAC opponents … Last season, the Fightin' Engineers defeated Wheaton College 5-4 for their first NCAA tournament victory before losing 5-1 to Washington University - St. Louis in the second round … Sophomore Ian Landwehr, a transfer from Navy, has a perfect 19-0 record against Division III opponents … Senior Cam Metzger earned HCAC Tournament MVP honors and stands second in program history with 61 career singles wins.
