KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Tyler Raclin and Jeremy Yuan led the way for the University of Chicago men's tennis team with a consolation bracket title win on the first day of the Western Michigan University Vredevelt Invitational Friday.

The junior/sophomore duo fell in a tight 7-6 decision to team from host defending Mid-American Conference champion Western Michigan in the Flight A opener, but would respond with 7-5, 6-3 wins over tandems from Detroit-Mercy and Notre Dame to finish the double portion with a 2-1 record.

In Flight D, two University of Chicago doubles teams would open with wins and later find themselves matched up against each other in the main draw third-place match. First-year Alex Guzhva and sophomore Alejandro Rodriguez won their opening match over Detroit-Mercy, 6-4 but fell to split team of Notre Dame and Purdue in the semifinals, 6-3.

Senior Charlie Pei and first-year Joshua Xu, competing in the same bracket, also won their first match, downing a duo from Valparaiso, 6-3. But a 6-4 loss to a Western Michigan pair created a Maroon vs. Maroon scenario in the third-place match, with Rodriguez and Guzhva coming out on top, 7-6 (5).

Juniors Erik Kerrigan and Ninan Kumar also won their opening match in Flight B, topping a DePaul squad by a 6-4 score. But the pair sustained losses to Butler (6-1) and DePaul (6-1) to round out play Friday.

In Flight C, rookies Shramay Dhawan and Arthur Chau won their second match of the day, a 6-3 win over a pair from Illinois State. The duo fell in the consolation final, 6-0, to a squad from Michigan State.

The tournament continues Saturday and Sunday in Kalamazoo, with singles draws to begin Saturday.
