CHICAGO – The University of Chicago men's tennis team hosts a six-team NCAA Division III Championship Regional this weekend May 10-12. The Maroons earned a first-round bye and open action on Saturday morning.

#2 UChicago Maroons

  • Notes: In last year's NCAA tournament, Augustana won its first-round match 5-2 before losing to UChicago 5-1 in the second round … The Vikings' 24 wins this year is a school record for wins in a season and the previous mark was 22 set by the 2009-10 team … No. 1 doubles team Peter Alex and Sriram Sugumaran set a new school record for wins in a single season by a doubles team with a record of 21-11 … Alex is also one win away from tying the school record for singles victories in a season. He is currently 22-4 and the mark is 23 held by current Viking assistant coach Jack Cullen in 2009-10 … Augustana's first NCAA opponent will be Luther, which is coached by Adam Strand - who fashioned a 107-66 record as the Augustana head coach from 2006 through 2011.

  • Notes: Luther's last NCAA tournament experience came in 2011, when they defeated Earlham College 5-0 and then lost to Washington-St. Louis 5-0 … The Norse own a 6-6 record all-time in postseason play … Luther qualified for this year's national tournament by winning the ARC AQ Tournament. The squad defeated Central College 5-0 in the semifinals and then defeated regular-season champions Coe College 5-2 in the championship match … Jake Smith leads the team with a 20-6 singles record, while the doubles tandem of Grant Morton and Brook Norwood are 16-5.


#16 Gustavus Adolphus Gusties

  • Notes: Gustavus won its 31st consecutive, and 52nd overall, MIAC regular season championship with a perfect 9-0 record in the conference. The Gusties won their ninth-straight MIAC playoff championship with a 5-1 win over Carleton College … GAC hosted an NCAA regional last year and lost in the third round to Whitman College 5-4 … Patrick Whaling and Chase Johnson earned All-America honors by taking third place at the ITA Oracle Cup in the fall … Johnson leads the team in singles victories at 20-5, playing primarily at No. 2. Whaling and Johnson are 28-5 in doubles … GAC owns a .754 winning percentage in doubles.


Grinnell Pioneers

  • Notes: Grinnell advanced by winning its 16th Midwest Conference title in-a-row, defeating Cornell College 5-0 and Lawrence University 5-0 … The Pioneers became only the second team in MWC history to win all nine flighted league titles (six singles, three doubles) … Bowen Mince was named MWC Newcomer of the Year. He currently owns a 15-10 singles record and a 24-8 doubles mark playing at the top positions … Grinnell has played seven teams in the postseason field this season, including Illinois Tech (W 8-1), University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (L 6-3), Goucher College (L 5-4), Principia College (W 8-1), Stevens Institute (W 5-4), Augustana (L 5-4) and Luther (W 6-3).


St. Scholastica Saints

  • Notes: St. Scholastica makes its NCAA postseason debut this weekend. They claimed the conference tourney crown over Martin Luther College 9-0 and University of Northwestern 8-1 … The Saints have won 23-straight UMAC regular season titles and 166-consecutive regular season conference dual matches … Serhii Tykhonenko is a three-time UMAC Player of the Year … Elliot Schneider enters the NCAA tournament having won 14-straight singles matches at either the No. 1 or 2 spots … The No. 1 doubles team of Tykhonenko and Rafa Gonzalez have won nine-consecutive matches … St. Scholastica played Luther back on March 2, with the Norse winning the match 7-2.
