KALAMAZOO, Mich. – University of Chicago tennis concluded its banner year on the final day of the NCAA Division III Singles and Doubles Championships on Sunday.
The NCAA doubles semifinal pitted UChicago's Erik Kerrigan and Ninan Kumar against Grant Urken/Jerry Jiang (Bowdoin College). The Maroon juniors seized the first set 6-3, then forced a second-set tiebreaker before Bowdoin evened the match up 7-6 (10-8). UChicago rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the deciding third set, but the Polar Bears came out the victors 6-4.
Kerrigan and Kumar concluded their standout season with a 26-8 doubles record, which included a 15-match winning streak. It was the second time they achieved All-American honors in doubles. They also reached the NCAA semifinals as a duo in 2017.
UChicago racked up four total All-American awards over the three-day weekend singles and doubles tournament – junior Marjorie Antohi (singles), Kerrigan (singles/doubles) and Kumar (doubles).
"We had a successful weekend of individual action following two great team seasons," Head Coach Jay Tee said. "I thought everyone who played this weekend battled hard and represented UChicago well. Fortunately for us, we have all of our qualifiers back again next season and hope to be in the conversation for national titles when we start again next fall."
