CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Chicago track and field teams opened the indoor season by winning its own Phoenix Invitational on Saturday.
The Maroon women led the seven-team field with 264.5 points and outdistanced runner-up Aurora University's 145 points. UChicago's men scored 206 points as Aurora was second at 121.166 points.
UChicago finished with six wins for the men and five wins for the women. Junior Brianna Hickey had one of the biggest margins of victory on the day, as she won the women's 3,000 meters (10:38.69) by 24 seconds. On the other end, sophomore Gareth Jones beat out the field in the men's 3,000 meters by only 0.64 seconds in a time of 8:54.45.
Senior Pam Yu was a multi-event winner as she swept the triple jump (10.59 meters) and the long jump (4.98 meters). Sophomore Andrew Maneval topped the shot put by 1.47 meters thanks to a heave of 14.37 meters.
