UChicago track and field wins four titles at first day of UAA Indoor Championships

CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Chicago track and field teams won four of the 10 total finals contested at day one of the 2015 University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday.

UChicago's women currently reside atop of the seven-team standings with 52 points, followed by Washington University-St. Louis with 32 points. On the men's side, Washington-St. Louis leads with 40 points and UChicago is second with 34 points.

Five event finals occurred during the day along with plenty of prelims inside UChicago's Henry Crown Field House. The Maroon women in particular excelled with three event victories. Junior Nkemdilim Nwaokolo easily bested the field in the weight throw with the top toss of 16.73 meters. That mark beat the runner-up by 2.78 meters. She has now won three-consecutive indoor weight throw titles. Senior Pam Yu had a much closer finish but came away with the same result. Yu won the long jump by only 0.02 meters while recording a leap of 5.48 meters. Junior Rachael Jackson also took third in the long jump with a mark of 5.26 meters to earn All-UAA honors.

A week after posting one of the top times in the nation, the UChicago women's distance medley relay made another statement with a comfortable victory in 12:01.07. The Maroon foursome of freshman Megan Verner-Crist, sophomore Michelle Dobbs, senior Jennifer Uehling and junior Brianna Hickey missed out on the UAA record by only 0.03 seconds. They also set a new facility record by almost 19 seconds. Junior Catherine Young achieved All-UAA status with her third-place showing in the 5,000 meters (17:49.83).

The Maroon men posted three All-UAA finishes themselves. Junior Nathan Massey led the way with a win in the weight throw at 14.45 meters. It was Massey's first career UAA title. Junior Michael Frasco (15:02.20) and sophomore Gareth Jones (15:05.29) broke away from the pack and finished the 5,000 meters strong to take second and third place, respectively.
