PITTSBURGH – The University of Chicago track and field teams earned three event victories to kick off day one of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships on Saturday.

A total of 14 event finals took place on the opening day of the meet. The biggest highlight came courtesy of Khia Kurtenbach. The senior broke the previous UAA meet record in the women's 10,000 meters that had stood for 26 years. Her winning time of 35:24.57 bested the old mark by nearly three seconds. Kurtenbach picked up her fifth career UAA title. She was joined on the podium by senior teammate Claire Costelloe, who placed third in a time of 37:00.86.

UChicago's women received six All-UAA honors by placing in the top three of an event. Sophomore Laura Darcey defended her title in the long jump with a leap of 5.53 meters, which won by a full 0.17 meters. Sophomore Mary Martin was runner-up at 5.36 meters, as the Maroons accounted for three of the top four finishers.

In the shot put, senior Ade Ayoola grabbed second place with a throw of 12.29 meters. The 4x800-meter relay was third in 9:23.55 with the quartet of Maddie DeVoe, Emma Dyer, Katie Jasminski and Megan Verner-Crist.

On the men's half, senior Nathan Downey tied for the best men's pole vault height of the day at 4.58 meters. He earned the UAA championship thanks to the fewer attempts tiebreaker.

Sophomore Alexander Scott was All-UAA twice in the throwing competitions. He was runner-up in both the shot put (15.20 meters) and hammer throw (47.47 meters).
