Maroon Women’s Track & Field Wins IWU I-55 Triangular, Men Take Second

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The University of Chicago women's track and field teams topped conference rival Washington University – St. Louis while the Maroon men took runner-up at Illinois Wesleyan University's I-55 Triangular on Saturday.

In the women's national preseason poll, WashU ranked No. 2 while UChicago came in at No. 4. Saturday's three-team meet saw the Maroons score 92 points, followed by WashU (84) and IWU (37). The men's final standings featured WashU at 100 points, UChicago at 82 and IWU at 35.

The women took advantage of their strength in the middle distances, capturing the 200 meters (Mary Martin), 400 meters (Isabel Layne), 800 meters (Kaitln Van Baalen), 1,200 meters (Zoe Smith) and one mile (Maggie Boudreau). All told, UChicago nabbed nine events. Sophomore Isabel Maletich swept the long jump and triple jumps with marks of 5.73 meters and 11.12 meters. Senior Isabel Garon took the pole vault (3.50). UChicago also captured the 4x400-meter relay (4:00.54).

Four Maroon men won individual events. Sophomore Henry Myers was first in the 3,000 meters in 8:45.45. Three field events went UChicago way as well – senior Alexander Scott in the shot put (15.73 meters), junior Ted Falkenhayn in the triple jump (13.39 meters) and first-year Christian Sodano in the pole vault (4.18 meters).
