WARRENVILLE, Ill. -- The University of Chicago men's and women's cross country teams both won the North Central College Open on Friday at St. James Farm.
In the field of four teams and 47 runners, the Chicago women won with 19 points and finished with six of the top seven racers.
Elsbeth Grant won the 5K race in a time of 18:28. Chicago then took third through seventh place - Maya Lewinsohn in 18:33, Vicky Espinoza in 18:43, Kathryn Vandervalk in 19:09, Kristin Greenwood in 19:11 and Karin Gorski in 19:26. Hannah Rausch finished in 11th (19:36).
On the men's side, the Maroons were also dominant in the 5K by placing 12 athletes in the top 13, finishing with an identical 19 points. Gregor Siegmund took first place (15:12.92) in the field of 38 individuals. Griffin Brunk (third place) and Kevin Vollrath (fourth place) were right on Siegmund's heels in 15:18. Taylor McDowell was fifth in 15:35, Ben Nickerson was sixth in 15:38, Daniel Povitsky was seventh in 15:54 and Evan Jin eighth in 16:00.
The Maroons will head out to Rochester, N.Y. for the UAA Championships next Saturday.
