Sauer and Whitmore named UAA Athletes of the Week

CHICAGO, Ill. -- University of Chicago athletes Jeff Sauer and Billy Whitmore were honored as University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week in their respective sports on Tuesday.

Sauer was named the UAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week after his performance in Saturday's season-opening 20-6 win over Beloit College. The senior kicker/punter made both PATs and a pair of field goals from 35 yards and 22 yards. He also punted the ball four times for an average of 47.8 yards with a long of 52 yards.

Sauer built upon his outstanding career marks, as he averaged 41.1 yards on 40 punts in 2011, placed 10 of 40 punts inside the opponents' 20-yard line and recorded six punts covering at least 50 yards. Sauer also connected on 26 of 28 extra-point attempts and on seven of 13 field goal tries and was selected to the 2011 Beyond Sports Network All-America Team.

Sauer previously garnered All-University Athletic Association First Team honors in 2010 and 2011 and was selected as UAA Special Teams Player of the Year in 2010.

Whitmore earned his UAA distinction in men's cross country. In his season-opening run at the Elmhurst College Invitational, the senior finished in third place individually with a time of 19:00.7.

In 2011, Whitmore earned All-American status with a seven-place showing at the NCAA Championships. His performance was the third-best in program history, behind Mike Axinns' runner-up performance in 1981 and Tom Haxton's sixth place showing in 2002.
