UChicago cross country places third and seventh at NCAA Midwest Regional

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The University of Chicago cross country teams posted strong finishes at the NCAA Midwest Regional on Saturday as the women placed third and the men took seventh. Five Maroons earned All-Region status on the day.

Individual and team national qualifiers will be chosen on Sunday to participate in next week's NCAA Division III Championships. The Maroon women are riding a five-year streak of qualifying for nationals while the men last joined them in 2013.

In the women's 6K race, Washington University-St. Louis won the team title with 68 points scored. UChicago tied for third place with University of Wisconsin-La Crosse at 126 points, but the Maroons earned the tiebreaker. The race featured 40 teams and 272 runners.

Three UChicago women earned All-Region status after finishing in the top 35 individually. Sophomore Khia Kurtenbach was the third-fastest overall racer of the day, finishing in 21:20.7. Senior Brianna Hickey took 11th at 21:34.8 and sophomore Kelsey Dunn placed 28th with a time of 22:10.9. Hickey has achieved All-Region status in all four years of her collegiate career.

In the men's 8K race, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (54 points) and North Central College (60) beat the rest of the 38-team field by a wide margin. UChicago was seventh with 170 points, finishing just two points behind host Augustana College and four ahead of Washington-St. Louis. A total of 257 runners participated.

For the second-consecutive year, senior Michael Frasco was the first Maroon to cross the finish line at Regionals. He finished 10th overall with a 24:41 mark to earn his second All-Region honor. Junior Gareth Jones was 21st with a time of 24:49.0 and achieved All-Region for the second time.
