Maroon men’s and women’s cross country teams both qualify for nationals

CHICAGO – The University of Chicago men's and women's cross country squads were both selected on Sunday afternoon to participate in next week's NCAA Division III Championships.

This is the second time in three years that both teams qualified for nationals simultaneously. The feat last happened in 2013, when the women placed fourth and the men took 28th place.

A total of 32 teams for each gender were picked to participate in the NCAA Championships based on their performances at the NCAA Regionals. The top two regional team finishers in each of the eight regions nationally were automatic qualifiers. An additional 16 teams were at-large picks. The top 56 individuals who were not part of an automatic qualifying team also gained selection.

The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh is hosting the championships on Saturday, Nov. 21 at Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne, Wis. The women's race will begin at 11:00 AM (CT) followed by the men's race at 12:30 PM (CT).

The UChicago women were an at-large selection after tying for third place at the NCAA Midwest Regional on Saturday. This is the sixth-straight year that the Maroon women have reached nationals as a team and the 11th time in program history. Last season, UChicago finished in 12th place and senior Catherine Young earned her second-straight All-American honor after taking 27th individually.

The Maroon men were also an at-large pick following their seventh-place showing at the NCAA Midwest Regional. This marks the eighth time that the men's team has qualified for the NCAA Championships.
