CHICAGO – Strong pitching was the story of the day on Sunday, as the University of Chicago softball team kept runners off the base paths and limited Washington University-St. Louis to only one run in a doubleheader sweep.

The Maroons improved to 13-8 and took three out of four in the weekend series against the Bears (14-9 record).

Game One – UChicago 3, Washington-St. Louis 1

WashU took advantage of a second-inning error to single in one run in the top of the second. But that would be all they would get the rest of the way. UChicago starting pitcher Molly Moran dominated from there. The junior threw all seven innings and struck out seven batters while only allowing four hits and no walks.

The final best chance for the visitors to score came in the sixth by advancing a runner to third. But Moran ended the inning by striking out a batter looking. She improved her season record to 5-4.

UChicago took the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, senior second base Anna Woolery drew a walk and was promptly driven in by sophomore outfielder Maeve Garvey's double to right center. Two batters later, sophomore first base Carly Schulz plated Garvey with a single through the right side. Freshman catcher Holli Jones added an insurance tally with a RBI groundout in the sixth.

The home team totaled six hits and one error. Garvey accounted for half of the hits, batting 3-for-3 with one RBI.

Game Two – UChicago 4, Washington-St. Louis 0

The final game of the series was once again controlled by UChicago's pitchers. Moran and freshman Megan Stoppelman combined to finish the game with only three hits allowed. The junior started the opening three innings and struck out three. Stoppelman (5-2 record) got the win in four innings of relief, posting two strikeouts and two hits allowed.

Senior third base Maggie O'Hara staked her team to a 1-0 lead with single up the middle in the third frame. Two more came around to score in the fifth – Garvey whacked a RBI double to right center and O'Hara brought in Woolery from third on a groundout. Sophomore second base Colleen Bennett doubled in the sixth to account for the fourth and final run.

Bennett (3-for-3) and Woolery (2-for-2) posted five of UChicago's seven hits in the contest.
