Maroon softball falls twice at Hope

HOLLAND, Mich. – The University of Chicago softball team couldn't find its offensive momentum on Monday afternoon as Hope College won twice, 3-1 and 6-1.

The Maroons fell to 16-11. The Flying Dutch improved to 20-6.

Game One – Hope 3, UChicago 1

After three scoreless innings, UChicago got onto the scoreboard first. With two outs, sophomore first base Carly Schulz drew a walk and freshman Christie Ambrose singled. A subsequent error brought Schulz around to score from second base.

Hope tied it up in the next half inning with a solo home run to left field. The hosts then went ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out triple to left field.

UChicago's offense was held in check with three hits. Sophomore outfielder Maeve Garvey tallied one hit and stole a base. Hope's starting pitcher struck out 15 batters in the game.

Junior Molly Moran (6-6 record) took the loss in six innings of work. She totaled three runs, five hits, three walks and four strikeouts.

Game Two – Hope 6, UChicago 1

The Maroons opened the scoring in the fourth inning once again, this time on Garvey's RBI groundout. However, the Flying Dutch drew ahead 2-1 in the fifth on a fielder's choice followed by a sacrifice fly. The second runner on the fly out was cut down at home plate to end the inning. Hope struck the big blow with four runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

UChicago tallied five hits and committed one error. Freshman pitcher Megan Stoppelman went 2-for-3 at the plate and also hurled all six innings. Her record dropped to 7-3 as she allowed five earned runs, seven hits and four walks while striking out two.
