Maroon Softball Sweeps Sunday; Defeats SUNY Fredonia & Oberlin

CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of Chicago softball team rebounded from a pair of close opening-day losses with Sunday's two-game sweep over SUNY Fredonia and Oberlin College on Day 2 of the PFX Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.

The Maroons (2-2) defeated the Blue Devils (6-6) of Fredonia by a score of 7-6, then dominated their second game of the day, beating the Yeowomen (2-4) in six innings, 10-2.

Junior Serena Moss went 5-for-8 on the day with  triple, home run and RBI, junior Carly Schulz was 5-for-7 with a triple and two RBI and sophomore Emma Nelson was 3-for-7 with five RBI and a double to lead the offense. Senior pitcher Molly Moran picked up the save in the one-run win over Fredonia and was credited with the win over Oberlin, pitching all six ininngs in the three-hitter.

Serena Moss' solo home run in the top of the sixth inning tied the game and the Maroons benefited off two walks with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh to win the ball game in Sunday's opener.

After game-winner Jordyne Prussak (four innings pitched, two earned runs) put together a solid effort, senior Molly Moran came in to close out the game with the save, allowing a hit before striking out the next two of three batters to seal it.

Fredonia led 4-0 after two innings and 5-1 after four, as sophomore Emma Nelson's RBI-double proved to be the lone score for the Maroons early. Junior Maeve Garvey's RBI-double in the fifth cut the lead to three, 5-2, to set up a key sixth inning for UChicago.

Carly Schulz (single) scored on an error and first-year Linette Pan crossed the plate on a Nelson RBI fielder's choice before Moss blasted her first home run of the year to tie it at 5-all.

Fredonia would briefly retake the lead in the sixth, 6-5, before the Maroons capitalized by loading the bases in the top of the seventh to set up two-straight RBI walks to take the lead for good.

Schulz finished 4-for-4 with three runs scored, Garvey was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a double, and Nelson was 1-for-3 with three RBI and a double to lead the offense.

UCHICAGO 10, OBERLIN 2 (6 innings)
Molly Moran's pitching kept the Yeowomen hitters off-balance and the Maroons used a big fifth-inning to blow the game open in Sunday's Game 2 win.

Moran allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out six in six inning pitched for her first win of the year and Serena Moss led the offense with a perfect 4-for-4 performance with three runs scored and a triple.

The Maroons led 1-0 after one after a Carly Schulz (1-for-3, two RBI, triple) sacrifice fly and then 2-0 after Gabi Angellotti's RBI-single in the third. Schulz added another RBI with a triple in the fourth to make it 3-1 Maroons before the fifth, when UChicago would get a run off an Angellotti single, another on an error and two more on Abby Hayes' double down the line to make it 7-1.

Emma Nelson, Sara Koniewicz and Colleen Bennett added RBIs in the sixth to create the final score in six, 10-2.

Angellotti, Nelson, Skye Collins and Hayes all had two hits each for the Maroons, with Hayes, Nelson, Angellotti and Schuz adding two RBI apiece.
