CHICAGO – First-year Abby Hayes belted her first career home run to lift the host University of Chicago softball team to a Game 1 win over visiting Wisconsin-Whitewater in a Friday split at Stagg Field.
The Maroons (14-8) defeated the Warhawks (14-8) 2-1 in the opener before falling in Game 2, 11-0.
Senior Molly Moran also pitched a gem in her Game 1 victory, carrying a no-hitter into the sixth inning en route to her seventh win of the year.
Hayes connected on her first home run of her career in the third inning to break open a scoreless game, sending the ball over the left-field fence to put UChicago up, 1-0. It was Hayes again in the fifth with the run-scoring fielder's choice, scoring Serena Moss (single) to give Moran an insurance run.
UW-Whitewater threatened in the top of the seventh with three hits and a run, but Moran regrouped to force the final Warhawk batter into a flyout to end the game.
Moran (7-3) gave up four hits, walked two, struck out four and gave up just one earned run in the victory and UChicago finished with three hits in the defensive game, with Moss and rookie Skye Collins adding singles.
The Maroons also handed UW-Whitewater pitcher Julia Camardo (6-2) her second loss of the season despite nine strikeouts.
UW-WHITEWATER 11, UCHICAGO 0 (5 innings)
A big second inning helped the Warhawks get on top early and starter Bella Matthias held the Maroons to just one hit in a shortened Game 2.
UChicago's Emma Nelson broke up the no-hitter in the fourth with a single.
UW-Whitewater had 12 hits in the game, including a home run in the second by Mattie Klingenmeyer.
