CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of Chicago softball team kicked off its 12-game spring break trip in Florida with a pair of Saturday losses.
Game One – St. Olaf 8, UChicago 5
UChicago got on the board right off the bat with first-year shortstop Savannah Pinedo securing a RBI groundout. However, St. Olaf answered right back with four runs in its half of the first inning sparked by a bases-loaded double.
Each time the Maroons scored, the Oles had an answer. UChicago received a RBI double from Pinedo and a run-scoring groundout from senior outfielder Maeve Garvey in the top of the third. St. Olaf got those two runs back in the bottom of the third on a single and double steal.
Sophomore outfielder Abby Hayes brought her team back to within 6-5 on a two-run single in the fourth. Once again, the Oles extended the advantage to 8-5 with a two-run triple.
UChicago finished with six hits but committed five errors defensively. Senior outfielder Serena Moss was 2-for-3 at the plate.
Game Two – Luther 10, UChicago 0
The afternoon contest quickly snowballed in Luther's favor. The Norse scored nine times in the second inning on only three hits while benefitting from seven walks.
The Maroons had opportunities to crack the scoreboard in the third and fourth innings. But they stranded the bases loaded on each occasion. The game ended after the fifth inning due to run rule.
UChicago totaled six hits in the contest. Dunne (0-1) absorbed the loss in the pitching circle in her 1+ inning of work. Prussak and Regenerus made relief appearances, as Regenerus went four innings with one run allowed and three strikeouts.
