CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of Chicago softball team captured its first win of the season 4-2 over Union (N.Y.) College before falling late to St. Catherine University 5-4 on Sunday.

The Maroons now stand at 1-3 on the season at the start of its 12-game spring break road trip in Florida.

Game One – UChicago 4, Union 2

UChicago wasted little time in drawing ahead in the top of first inning. First-year outfielder Samantha Lauro led off with a single, stole second base and scored on a double by senior outfielder Maeve Garvey.

Union struck back in the bottom half of the frame to tie the game before the Maroons escaped a bases-loaded jam without further damage. The Dutch went up 2-1 in the second on an RBI double.

First-year first base Jules Waller knotted the game back up with a single to center field in the top of the fourth. Then in the sixth, it was sophomore Abby Hayes who came through in the clutch with a pinch-hit triple that plated the go-ahead runs.

Pitcher Bethany Regnerus (1-0 record) retired all nine batters she faced to pick up her first collegiate victory. Senior Jordyne Prussak started the opening four innings.

The Maroons collected eight hits while committing one error.

Game Two – St. Catherine 5, UChicago 4

The first inning continued to pay dividends for the Maroons, this time with three runs crossing home plate. Three-straight singles included first-year infielder Savannah Pinedo's RBI knock to right field. Waller posted a bases-loaded single and first-year outfielder Lainey Hughes' RBI groundout made it 3-0.

Pinedo did more damage in the very next inning by whacking a run-scoring double to left field. That proved to be UChicago's final tally of the afternoon.

St. Catherine slowly but surely chipped away at the deficit by scoring on a pair of sacrifice flies and a passed ball. Then in the bottom of the sixth, a two-out single netted the tying and go-ahead scores.

The Maroons put a runner on third with two outs in the seventh before St. Catherine closed the game with a strikeout.

Offensively, UChicago recorded nine hits while making one error defensively. Hayes was 3-for-4 at the plate while Pinedo and first-year outfielder Maddy Mudrick each hit 2-for-4.

Regnerus (1-1) absorbed the loss in relief, with three runs in two innings. First-year Olivia Dunne pitched four innings as the starter in the circle.
