CLERMONT, Fla. – After a rain-delayed morning, the University of Chicago softball team split its Wednesday games, losing to Franklin College and beating University of Wisconsin-Stout.

The Maroons ran their record to 4-4.

Game One – Franklin 6, UChicago 2

The Grizzlies were first on the board with an unearned run in the opening frame, but senior pitcher Jordyne Prussak kept the offense in check for the next three innings. Prussak emerged from a bases-loaded jam unscathed in the top of the fourth as well. Meanwhile, UChicago's offense was held to two hits in the opening five innings.

Franklin broke through with two runs in the fifth on a two-out error, and three more in the sixth. UChicago ended the shutout bid in the bottom of the sixth when senior Maeve Garvey delivered a pinch-hit RBI single to left. An infield error allowed another to score as well. However, Franklin closed out the game without further damage.

UChicago posted three hits and two errors. Prussak (0-2 record) worked all seven innings in the circle, with three strikeouts and three earned runs.

Game Two – UChicago 4, Wisconsin-Stout 3

UChicago and Wisconsin-Stout were scheduled for an early morning contest; however, rain pushed the game back to the late afternoon. The two sides exchanged one run each in the first inning, with Garvey bashing an RBI double with two outs.

First-year outfielder Samantha Lauro gave the Maroons some breathing room in the bottom of the second with a two-run triple to right field. Then in the fifth, Garvey struck again with another RBI double, this time to center field.

UChicago rookie pitcher Bethany Regnerus cruised into the top of the seventh in control of the proceedings and ready to close out the complete game. But a pair of infield errors put runners in scoring position, allowing extra life for the Blue Devils. They made the Maroons pay for the miscues with a two-run double that closed the gap to 4-3. With the tying run on base, Regnerus induced a pop fly to shortstop that clinched the victory.

The Maroons tallied nine hits and two errors. Garvey went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Regnerus improved her record to 3-1. Her pitching line included three strikeouts, five hits and one earned run.
