CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of Chicago softball team took on a pair of Wisconsin teams Friday morning down in Florida, resulting in a 5-3 win over University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and a 6-0 loss to University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
The Maroons moved to 5-5 on the year.
Game One – UChicago 5, Wisconsin-Eau Claire 3
The Blugolds went up 1-0 in their first at-bat thanks to an error. However, UChicago jumped ahead in the bottom of the frame. Senior designated player Maeve Garvey mashed a two-run homer to center field to put her team on top.
The bottom of the fourth saw some insurance runs tacked on, as sophomore Gabi Angellotti knocked a two-run double to left. A double steal later in the inning allowed senior infielder Colleen Bennett to cross home plate as well.
UWEC threatened in the sixth by loading the bases with one out, but a double play got the Maroons out of the jam. The lead shrunk to 5-3 on a single and sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh before pitcher Jordyne Prussak finished off the complete game. The senior righty improved to 1-2 with two earned runs and two strikeouts.
UChicago tallied seven hits and two errors. First-year outfielder Samantha Lauro hit 2-for-3 out of the leadoff spot while Bennett stole two bases.
Game Two – Wisconsin-River Falls 6, UChicago 0
The Falcons gained control from the onset, scoring once in the first, twice in the third and fourth, and one more time in the sixth. Meanwhile, the Maroons struggled to establish their offense and were limited to three hits total.
Garvey paced the offense once again by going 2-for-3. The UChicago defense committed two errors.
