BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The University of Chicago softball team sustained two losses to solid competition in Saturday's Illinois Wesleyan University Tournament, falling to the host (and No. 4 ranked) Titans, 5-0, and then to a 20-win Millikin team, 7-6.
Day 2 of the tournament, originally slated for Sunday, was cancelled due to impending inclement weather.
MILLIKIN 7, UCHICAGO 6
The Big Blue (20-8) scored two runs in the seventh and the Maroons weren't able to answer in the bottom half in a back-and-forth affair Saturday.
First-year Katie O'Donnell led the Maroons with three hits and three RBI, including the go-ahead single up the middle in the bottom of the sixth that put UChicago up, 6-5. But Millikin answered back in the top of the seventh with a two-RBI single of their own from Alyssa White that gave the Big Blue the lead for good.
Millikin struck first in the game with a run in the first and it was also O'Donnell who answered with an single to right center in the third for two more RBI that made it 2-1, UChicago. But the Big Blue would tie it up in the fourth, before two doubles by Lainey Hughes and Colleen Bennett scored two more runs for the Maroons to give them a 4-2 lead.
But yet again Millikin answered the call, delivering RBI hits in the fifth to tie it at 4-all before Gabi Angellotti's single in the fifth gave UChicago a 5-4 advantage. That was short-lived, as an error in the sixth allowed Millikin to score and send it tied 5-all to set up O'Donnell.
Angellotti finished with two hits and Huges and Bennett accounted for both of the Maroons extra-base hits with their doubles. Jordyne Prussak took the loss for UChicago in the complete-game effort, striking out one.
#4 ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 5, UCHICAGO 0
Maroons' first-year Savannah Pinedo broke up the no-hitter for IWU's Ally Wiegand with a double in the sixth, but the Titans' ace kept UChicago off-balance throughout to hand it a 5-0 loss in Saturday's opener.
IWU used small-ball to (20-5) get on the board with a run in the first, scoring on an RBI groundout by Colleen Palczynski. The Titans added another score in the second on another RBI groundout, and the score would not change for the next three innings.
The Titans were able to get another runner on third base in the fifth and plated her with a Shelby Fulk single before adding two more in the sixth on a Jillian Runyon RBI triple.
Pinedo gave UChicago its lone scoring chance in the sixth with her double to left field, but Wiegand forced the next two Maroon batters to fly out and line out to end the threat.
First-year Bethany Regnerus took the loss, scattering seven hits and striking out one.
