CHICAGO – A clutch seventh inning in Game 2 gave the University of Chicago softball team a big win to preserve a split in Tuesday's doubleheader at North Park University.

The Maroons (12-16) defeated the Vikings (14-22) 5-1 in the nightcap after falling in Game 1, 7-4.

A clutch seventh-inning helped the Maroons even up the series with a win in Tuesday's nightcap.

Senior Jordyne Prussak came up with the key seventh-inning hit, leading off the top of the frame with a pinch-hit line-drive double to left field. Jules Waller added a single and Samantha Lauro walked to load the bases with one out. Sophomore Abby Hayes delivered the game-winner, dropping in a single behind second base to score the go-ahead run.

UChicago would get three more in the inning, two on an Emma Nelson single to make it 5-1. First-year Bethany Regnerus, who took over in the circle in the sixth, closed out the game in 1-2-3 fashion to seal it and give the rookie her seventh win of the year.

Back-to-back doubles by Hughes and Nelson (RBI) scored the game's first run in the fourth. North Park answered with score in the bottom of the inning.

Nelson finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and a team-best three RBI to lead the Maroons. Lainey Hughes went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two doubles and Hayes was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Maroons battled back after an early deficit to tie the game midway through, but a big fourth inning by North Park swung the momentum back to the hosts in the opener.

The Vikings scored a run in the first and added two more in the second to take an early 3-0 lead. UChicago would respond though, with a big three-run third inning. Back-to-back singles by Samantha Lauro and Maddy Mudrick set up Garvey, who hit a dribbler in front of the plate that the North Park infield couldn't handle to score one.

With two on, Angellotti connected on a sacrifice fly and one play later the Maroons successfully executed the double steal, with Hayes sliding safely under the tag to make it 3-all.

The Vikings weren't done, however, as North Park would answer with four runs in the fourth – capitalizing off two walks, two wild pitches with runners on and an error. Lauro led off the top of the seventh with a double down the left field line and Angelotti would plate her with a double of her own, but North Park was able to escape the inning to seal the win.

Lauro finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a double and Angellotti went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a double. Abby Hayes added two singles and Garvey had the other RBI with her single for the Maroons. Senior Jordyne Prussak took the loss in the circle for the Maroons, striking out one. Reliever Olivia Dunne struck out two and didn't give up a hit in her 2 1/3 innings.
