MONTGOMERY, Ill. – Aurora University kept the University of Chicago softball team's offense at bay in Wednesday's doubleheader sweep.
The Maroons dropped to 12-18 while the Spartans moved to 23-13.
Game One – Aurora 4, UChicago 1
The hosts wasted little time, bombing a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning. That was all the Spartans would need as they limited UChicago to one hit all game. That hit came courtesy of sophomore outfielder Abby Hayes, who struck an RBI double to left center in the third inning.
Aurora added insurance with a double in the third and a solo home run in the fifth to account for the final margin.
First-year pitcher Olivia Dunne (2-4 record) started the game and absorbed the loss. She allowed four runs and struck out three in 4.1 innings. Senior Jordyne Prussak pitched the remaining 1.2 scoreless innings.
Game Two – Aurora 7, UChicago 1
The Spartans kept the momentum in the nightcap and scored six of their runs in the opening three innings. Meanwhile, UChicago was able to get runners into scoring position consistently but were unable to bring any of them around. A single, walk and hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth. But a fly out ended the opportunity.
First-year outfielder Samantha Lauro singled to lead off the seventh. After advancing to second base on an error, she came in to score on a double by Prussak.
The Maroons finished with eight hits and three errors on their score line. Lauro batted 2-for-3 and senior infielder Colleen Bennett hit 2-for-2.
