ROSEMONT, Ill. – In its season debut, the University of Chicago softball team defeated University of Wisconsin-Stout and took a loss to University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Sunday.
The Maroons played both games inside The Dome sports facility in nearby Rosemont.
Game One – UChicago 9, Wisconsin-Stout 7
The first game of the day against the Blue Devils got off to a rough start. Two errors and three hits in the first inning gave UW-Stout four runs, then they added two more in the second to take a 6-1 lead. UChicago's opening score came in the top of the first on a double by junior Gabi Angellotti.
The Maroons had an answer in the third inning, reeling off six runs on three hits. Four walks by the Blue Devils proved costly, including two of the bases-loaded variety that forced runners across. Sophomore Savannah Pinedo knocked an RBI single and sophomore Jules Waller cracked an RBI double. The last two runners came in via error.
UChicago added one in the fourth and fifth for insurance, courtesy of an Angellotti single and an error. The Blue Devils pulled one back in the sixth, but sophomore pitcher Olivia Dunne closed out the game for the save.
UChicago knocked nine hits and committed two errors. The batters showed patience throughout, drawing eight walks. Angellotti paced the offense by going 2-for-3 with three RBI. Sophomore Samantha Lauro went 2-for-3 with two walks, and Waller was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one walk.
Sophomore pitcher Bethany Regnerus (1-0 record) started the game in the circle, throwing five innings with two earned runs and three strikeouts. First-year Jenna Uhles and Dunne (two strikeouts) tossed one inning of relief apiece.
Game Two – Wisconsin-Oshkosh 12, UChicago 7
Lauro got the Maroons on the board only two batters into game two against Wisconsin-Oshkosh. After drawing a leadoff walk, the sophomore outfielder stole second base and then scored on a single. A wild pitch brought in a second run, and Pinedo made it 3-0.
The Titans got two back in the second inning and three more in the third to make it 5-4. A sacrifice fly by sophomore Lainey Hughes came in the bottom of the second inning.
Both teams kept each other off the scoreboard from that point until the bottom of the seventh. That's when Pinedo delivered a decisive single to center field to tie it up at 5-5 and send the contest to extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, UWO broke out by scoring seven runs to pull away. UChicago put up two in the bottom half of the frame on a single by sophomore Maddy Mudrick, but the Titans didn't allow any further rally.
The Maroons tallied nine hits but committed four errors. Junior Abby Hayes, Pinedo and Mudrick each went 3-for-4 at the plate.
Dunne threw the opening seven innings with two earned runs and four strikeouts. Regnerus (1-1) took the loss in the eighth inning, with Uhles also seeing action in the eighth.
