Maroon women's basketball loses for first time this season 64-57 to Carthage

CHICAGO – Despite strong shooting and a double-digit lead at halftime, the University of Chicago women's basketball team fell behind after a rough third quarter and lost to Carthage College 64-57 on Sunday.

The No. 19-ranked Maroons (4-1 record) absorbed their first loss of the season. The Lady Reds (4-0) have won four-straight matchups against UChicago.

Carthage played a 2-3 zone against the Maroons and tried to shut off interior penetration. UChicago eventually found success in the first quarter with baseline cuts for baskets. The home team made its move near the end of the opening period, with junior forward Britta Nordstrom scoring a layup to make the score 13-12. Back-to-back jumpers from beyond the arc extended the lead to 19-12, courtesy of sophomore guard Madison Dunbar and senior guard Caitlin Moore.

UChicago converted its opening three shots in the second quarter and led 27-15. Nordstrom was an important cog with drives and kicks to the perimeter, resulting in four assists in the first half. Overall, the Maroons shot 50 percent in the first half and took a 37-24 lead into the locker room. UChicago hit five treys and Nordstrom contributed 10 points to pace the scoring.

The third quarter went south in a hurry for the home side. Facing a 42-28 deficit, Carthage locked down on defense, sagging back into the paint to not allow any looks from in close. UChicago struggled with entry passes and couldn't get penetration, resulting in rushed jumpers at the end of the shot clock. The Lady Reds reeled off an 18-0 run that extended into the fourth quarter and led 46-42.

Carthage scored 20 points in both the third and fourth quarter, with guard Morgan Harris as the focal point. She burned the defense for 29 points on 17 shots while also grabbing 10 rebounds.

UChicago started to see success on drives to the paint in the fourth quarter, with Nordstrom scoring two-straight layups. Junior guard Stephanie Anderson canned a three-pointer to tie the score 53-53 with 2:53 remaining in the game.

However, Carthage wore a path to the free throw line in the final two minutes, converting 11 of 12. UChicago only attempted five free throws in the game while the Lady Reds had 29 attempts.

The Maroons shot 27 percent from the field in the second half and Carthage shot 52 percent in that time. UChicago ended up winning the rebounding battle 38-34, including 16-8 on the offensive glass. Freshman forward Olariche Obi continued her rebounding prowess with nine offensive boards and 13 rebounds overall.

Nordstrom led the team in scoring with 16 points and added eight rebounds. Moore tallied 10 points and Dunbar scored nine.
