TACOMA, Wash. – A wild first quarter set the tone for Saturday's game and the University of Chicago women's basketball team rode several big scoring performances to an 88-85 victory over University of Puget Sound at the Pacific Northwest Tournament.
The Maroons (7-2 record) posted their highest point total in a game since a win over University of Rochester on Feb. 2, 2014 by an identical score. The Loggers fell to 6-5 on the season after the first-ever meeting between the two squads.
It was all about the offense in opening quarter of the game. UChicago ran out to an early 11-2 lead. Sophomore guard Elizabeth Nye and Nordstrom were the catalysts with 21 combined points in the period. The Maroons led 29-24 heading into the second quarter, and both sides kept the points coming from then on. In total, the lead changed 16 times in the contest along with eight ties.
The two teams both shot over 50 percent from the field in the first half. The Maroons headed into the break with a 49-46 advantage thanks to a buzz-beating three by sophomore guard Katie Anderson. Nye hit 3 of 4 from three-point range to post 15 points, with Nordstrom making 5 of 6 shots for 14 points in the half.
Momentum swung back and forth in the third and fourth quarters as well. Puget Sound went ahead 68-63, but junior guard Stephanie Anderson hit a layup and two free throws down the stretch to give UChicago a narrow 69-68 edge heading into the fourth.
Katie Anderson sank a pair of clutch shots for the Maroons with a three-pointer and a mid-range jumper on consecutive possessions to put her team up 83-81 in the final minutes. After the Loggers made two free throws to tie things up, Nye put in a driving layup from the right side to make it 85-83 with 44 seconds remaining. Nye then split a pair of free throws at 86-85.
Stephanie Anderson pulled down a missed Puget Sound jumper and was fouled with eight seconds on the game clock. She then calmly nailed both free throws to push the lead to 88-85. The Loggers missed a trey at the end as UChicago emerged with two wins on the weekend road trip.
Nye's 21 points tied her season high and Nordstrom's 19 points marked her fifth-straight game with double-digit scoring. Senior guard Caitlin Moore added 12 points in the starting lineup, while Katie Anderson (11 points) and Obi (10 points, 7 rebounds) contributed off the bench.
Rebounds went in favor of UChicago 37-32. Turnovers were even with 17 per team. The Maroons led the second-chance points category 19-9.
