DUBUQUE, Iowa – A late surge by the home team put the University of Chicago women's basketball team in a hole and Loras College finished the game strong to defeat the Maroons 79-68 on Saturday.
The Maroons dropped to 7-3 on the season while the Duhawks improved to 7-5.
Heading into the fourth quarter, the game was knotted at 51-51. UChicago grabbed a 59-55 advantage with a three-pointer from sophomore guard Elizabeth Nye and a jumper by freshman guard Katrina Williams. However, it was all Loras after that. Over a five-minute stretch, the Duhawks embarked on an 18-2 roll that put the game out of reach.
Rebounding proved to be a crucial category as Loras dominated the glass 53-36 overall, including 21-10 on offensive boards. Despite the large disparity on the boards, UChicago played solid defense of its own throughout the first three quarters. Senior guard Caitlin Moore got the Maroons off on a good foot in the first quarter. Her three-point jumper gave the visitors a 12-5 lead early on.
The second quarter featured plenty of offense from Britta Nordstrom. After a rough shooting start to the game, the junior forward filled up the scoreboard with 12 points in the second quarter. Her three-pointer made the score 23-17, while a layup and foul resulted in a traditional three-point play at 30-22. UChicago led at halftime 30-27.
A 7-0 run by Loras erased UChicago's third-quarter advantage and it was back and forth the rest of the way until the fourth quarter rolled around.
Nordstrom posted her second double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds on her ledger. Nye added 11 points and Moore scored 10 points to augment the offense.
