CHICAGO – In one of its best defensive efforts in two decades, the University of Chicago women's basketball team dominated from start to finish in a 69-28 victory at Illinois Institute of Technology on Monday.
The Maroons wrapped up the non-conference portion of their schedule with an 8-3 record. The Scarlet Hawks fell to 0-12. The 28 points were UChicago's lowest point total allowed since a 101-28 victory versus Rockford College in the 1992-93 season.
Early in the game, Britta Nordstrom was an offense unto herself. The Maroon junior forward scored the team's opening 10 points of the game. Nordstrom maintained her torrid shooting stroke throughout the evening, converting 8 of 9 shots for a game-high 16 points. She has now shot over 70 percent from the field in six contests so far this season.
Sophomore guard Katie Anderson netted a three-pointer to make the score 13-2 and the rout was on. A 10-1 run to start the second quarter put the visitors up by 20 points. The halftime score stood at 36-16, with the Maroons shooting 50 percent on their field goals.
UChicago blew the game wide open by outscoring IIT 22-2 in the third quarter. The Maroons eventually entered 12 players into the game and nine broke into the scoring column. Olariche Obi made the biggest impact off the bench with her fourth double-double of the season. The freshman forward pulled down 14 rebounds and scored 14 points. She currently leads the team in rebounding with 9.1 per game. Sophomore guard Elizabeth Nye contributed double-digit points with 11 of her own.
Rebounds were even at 37 for each team. However, turnovers were hugely in the Maroons' favor – forcing 31 while committing 12 themselves. The team's 17 steals were a new season high.
