CLEVELAND, Ohio – The UChicago women's basketball team wrapped up its eight-game road trip by shooting a sizzling 53 percent from three-point range en route to a 67-58 win at Case Western Reserve University on Sunday.
The Maroons (9-5 overall, 1-2 University Athletic Association) put together a well-rounded scoring effort as six Maroons scored at least seven points. Senior guard Caitlin Moore and junior forward Britta Nordstrom led the way with 11 apiece, while sophomore guard Madison Dunbar contributed 10 points off the bench.
Junior guard Jessica McCoy paced all scorers with 14 for the Spartans, who dropped their third in-a-row and now stand at 5-9 (0-3 UAA).
While UChicago shot only 35.9 percent from the field overall in the game, the three-point arc was a welcome location for the shooters, who hit 8-for-15. Underclassmen – including sophomore guard Elizabeth Nye (3 of 4), Dunbar (2 of 2), sophomore guard Katie Anderson (2 of 4) and freshman guard Jamie Kockenmeister (1 of 2) – led the way in the long-ball department.
Hillary Hellmann came off the bench for Case and hit two three-pointers to get the home team started on offense. The lead changed six times in the first quarter with the Spartans leading 17-15 after the first 10 minutes.
Anderson and Dunbar hit back-to-back threes to give the Maroons the 21-17 edge early in the second quarter. Then, within three minutes, Anderson and Dunbar sandwiched another pair of threes around a layup to give the Maroons the 29-19 lead with 6:12 left in the half. UChicago translated the hot shooting into a 21-9 scoring advantage on the quarter, giving the visitors a 36-26 lead going into the break.
All five starters got on the scoreboard in the third quarter to give the Spartans 18 points – their largest output of any quarter on the afternoon. However, the Maroons countered with 16 points of their own to go into the final period ahead by eight.
Nye started the fourth quarter with two cold-blooded threes that swished home without gracing the iron to give the Maroons a quick 58-46 advantage. With 5:04 left, the Maroons grabbed their largest lead of the day at 15 following junior guard Stephanie Anderson's layup. From that point on, UChicago relied on its defense to finish off the victory.
While the three-point shooting was prominent, the Maroons also continued to play their suffocating man-to-man defense. UChicago forced 23 turnovers and held Case to 33.3 percent shooting from the field. Case held the edge in rebounding 42-38.
