KENOSHA, Wis. – After losing a double-digit lead late in the game, the University of Chicago women's basketball team rebounded with clutch free throws to force overtime, where the Maroons clinched an 86-81 victory at Carthage College on Sunday.
The Maroons maintained their perfect start to the season at 4-0. The Lady Reds fell to 3-2.
The visitors got off to a promising start, utilizing an 8-2 run to end the first quarter with an 18-10 advantage. Six points in the second quarter by sophomore forward Olariche Obi helped the Maroons take a 28-19 lead into halftime.
In the action-filled third quarter, Carthage drew to within four points at 42-38. But the Maroons scored 10 of the next 12 points, punctuated by senior guard Stephanie Anderson's three-pointer at 52-40. Freshman guard Emily Cochrane's triple gave the visitors their largest lead of the game, 65-48 with under seven minutes remaining in the game.
However, the Lady Reds caught fire and went on an epic 21-2 run down the stretch. Carthage scored 29 points in the fourth quarter as UChicago had no answer to stem the tide. The Maroons found themselves down 69-67 in the final 22 seconds of the game with one possession left. Junior guard Elizabeth Nye's offensive rebound off a miss proved critical and senior forward Britta Nordstrom was subsequently fouled with seven seconds remaining. Nordstrom calmly sank both free throws to tie the game. Nye then stole the ball in the final two seconds to send the contest into overtime.
Nordstrom was the go-to scorer after halftime and the senior delivered with 20 points over the final 25 minutes. She tallied seven points in the overtime, converting two layups and three free throws. After a brief tie at 78-78, the Maroons made 8 of 10 free throws over the final two minutes to distance themselves and earn the win.
Nordstrom tied for high scoring honors with Obi, who tallied a career-best 20 points on 9-for-10 shooting. Nordstrom pulled in nine rebounds and dished out six assists. Obi was also a force on the boards with nine of her own. Anderson's stat line included 13 points and five rebounds.
UChicago was dominant on the glass with a 52-36 lead in rebounds. For the season, the team has outrebounded opponents by an average of 17.3 rebounds per game. The Maroons shot 40.3 percent overall and made nine treys. Carthage shot 38.6 percent from the field.
