CHICAGO – The No. 22 University of Chicago women's basketball team got back on the winning track with Sunday's convincing 83-52 nonleague victory over Colorado Classic to conclude the Midway Classic Sunday at the Ratner Athletics Center.
Sophomore Taylor Lake led the way with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting and junior Olariche Obi and first-year Meaghan O'Hara each scored 13 and pulled down seven rebounds apiece. Fellow first-year forward Marissa Igunbor added 11 points and two blocks to round out the Maroons in double-figures.
Colorado College (0-2) would get on the board first via a Casey Torbet layup, but the Maroons (2-1) didn't waste time getting their offense rolling. UChicago finished the first quarter on a 26-8 run, fueled by seven points from O'Hara off the bench.
The Maroons shot a crisp 51.4 percent (18-of-35) in the first half to push that lead to 48-21 at the break, led by O'Hara's 11 and six boards and Obi's seven points and five rebounds.
The Tigers would open the second half with some momentum with a 5-0 run, draining their first five attempts from the floor. But UChicago withstood the charge, as Obi and Lake hit back-to-back layups to push the hosts' lead back to 25. A Mia Farrell (six points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals) jumper closed out the third frame and ballooned the lead to 30, at 67-37.
UChicago's reserves held the lead in the final frame, as first-year Ionie Banner chipped in five points – including a triple with shot clock expiring – and classmate Jaida Kenana also got in the action with a nice drive to rim late.
UChicago shot 51.6 percent (32-of-62) from the field and held the Tigers to 32.8 percent (22-of-67) from the floor for the game. The boards were fairly even, with the Maroons holding a 43-39 advantage.
Torbet led the Tigers with 19 points, hitting 8-of-12 from the field as the lone Colorado College player in double-figures.
