KENOSHA, Wis. -- A strong third quarter allowed the No. 7 University of Chicago women's basketball team to pull away from host Carthage College, and the Maroons' balanced scoring attack led to a 68-59 win Sunday afternoon.

The Maroons (7-1) had four players in double-figures, led by junior Taylor Lake's 13 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Miranda Burt and Mia Farrell each added 12 points and rookie Klaire Steffens chipped in 10 points for UChicago, who played for the first time after a 12-day layoff.

Burt was especially efficient, shooting 5-of-7 from the field and 2-of-3 from 3-point land, while adding five steals, four rebounds, and three assists.

UChicago opened the game on a strong note, bolting out to a 19-9 lead after one quarter. Burt made the first bucket of the game -- a 3 at the 6:57 mark -- before the game stood tied at 7-all with just under four minutes to play in the first frame. The Maroons would go on to close out the quarter with a 12-2 run to take control early. Carthage didn't fold early though, outscoring the Maroons by a 20-13 margin to head into the locker room down by just three, 32-29.

The third quarter would prove to be the turning point. With UChicago leading by just two, 36-34, senior Jamie Kockenmeister drained a triple that kickstarted a 16-5 run to give the visitors a 13-point advantage, 52-39, heading into the final frame. Lake and Kockenmeister would each add another make from downtown and Burt scored two layups during the run.

Carthage would make one more run to pull within six (54-48) at the 6:42 mark, but it was a pair of Maroon first-years that would help stall the Lady Reds (4-5), as Steffens drained two free throws and Elizabeth Shaw came up with a steal and layup to return that lead to 10.

Kockenmeister's made 3 at the 1:54 mark -- she finished the game with nine points -- would all but seal the Maroons' seventh win of the year.

UChicago shot 38.8 percent (26 for 67) from the field and 38.1 percent (8-of-21) from the 3-point line compared to 36.8 percent (21 for 57) and 29.4 percent (5 for 17) for the Lady Reds. Both teams struggled from the free throw line -- the Maroons made 8-of-20 (40 percent) and Carthage 12-of-22 (54.5 percent) and UChicago just edged the hosts on the boards, 45-43.

Assists (14-4), points of turnovers (14-6) and bench points (16-5) all proved to be key wins for the Maroons.

Olariche Obi (six points) and Farrell led the Maroons with eight rebounds each and Kockenmeister added four assists.

Bailey Gilbert led Carthage with 19 points in the loss.
