NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A big push after halftime spurred the University of Chicago women's basketball team to a comfortable 74-49 victory over Beloit College on Saturday.

The No. 8-ranked Maroons (9-1 record) was back in action following an 11-day break between games. The Bucs fell to 2-8 on the year. The teams played a neutral site game at Trevecca Nazarene University.

Beloit took its first and only lead of the game at 2-0, and only held it for only 20 seconds before UChicago tied it up. From that point on, the Maroons held sway for the next 38 minutes on the scoreboard.

A couple of baskets in the paint from senior forward Olariche Obi got UChicago going early. Beloit hung close up to 16-13, but a 12-2 Maroon run put the Bucs in a sizable hole. A jumper in the final five seconds of the half by junior guard Mia Farrell spotted her team a 30-20 advantage going into the halftime locker room.

UChicago put the game away in the third quarter, bursting away with 27 points in the period. Obi and Farrell posted six points apiece in that time. A 17-4 run gave the Maroons a dominating 23-point lead.

Beloit was not able to cut the deficit to under 17 points the rest of the way and UChicago cruised to the finish.

Rebounding proved a telling category as the Maroons won that column 51-37. The Bucs committed 22 turnovers compared to 16 by UChicago.

Farrell posted a team-high 14 points while Obi tallied her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. First-year forward Klaire Steffens collected 10 points and seven rebounds off bench. Junior guard Miranda Burt also chipped in 10 points.

UChicago shot 44 percent from the field, 31.3 percent from three (4-16) and 37.5 percent from the free-throw line (3-8). Beloit was held to 31.5 percent shooting overall, 28.6 percent from beyond the arc (6-21) and 52.9 percent from the charity stripe (9-17). This marks the sixth time this season that the Maroons have held an opponent under 40 percent field-goal shooting.
