ST. LOUIS – A third-quarter surge proved the difference on Saturday as the University of Chicago women's basketball team lost at Washington University – St. Louis 67-52 on Saturday.
The No. 22-ranked Maroons ended their regular season schedule with a 19-6 overall record and a 10-4 mark in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Bears moved to 18-6 (13-1 UAA).
UChicago is now an at-large Pool C candidate for the upcoming NCAA tournament. The postseason selection show will occur on Monday at 1:30 PM (CT) on NCAA.com.
A struggling offense hampered UChicago throughout as the visitors were held to 28.1 percent from the field, including 17.9 percent from three-point range (5-28). WashU won the rebounding battle 44-35 and shot 45.5 percent on field goals.
Senior forward Olariche Obi tallied 11 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Junior guard Mia Farrell scored a team-high 13 points, while junior guard Miranda Burt contributed 12 points, five rebounds and three steals.
WashU went ahead 14-8 in the first quarter, but the Maroons tied it up thanks to a three-pointer by Farrell and Obi's and-one layup. Two more Obi layups sandwiched around a three-pointer by sophomore guard Meaghan O'Hara gave UChicago its biggest advantage at 21-16. However, the visitors went cold offensively from there as the Bears embarked on a 12-1 run.
Burt's layup in the final minute of the half pulled UChicago to within two points at halftime, 28-26. The deficit decreased to 32-31 in the third quarter. However, WashU got into a rhythm with a 16-4 run. The Maroons got within eight points on several occasions down the stretch, but to no avail.
