CHICAGO – The No. 24 University of Chicago women's basketball team cruised to its fifth-straight victory in dominant fashion Wednesday night, as the host Maroons downed Mount Mary University by a final score of 74-23.

Taylor Lake and Miranda Burt each had 12 points apiece to lead UChicago, with Lake adding eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Sophomore Klaire Steffens added a near-double-double with nine points, seven boards and three steals, and three first-years had seven points: Grace Hynes, Lucy Schmid and Alina Brennan.

Hynes delivered an all-around game, adding eight rebounds and six assists.

The Maroons (6-2) came up short on a couple opening layup attempts and the Blue Angels took advantage in the opening minute, scoring the game's first bucket 18 seconds into the game.

UChicago's defense didn't allow another MMU point for the next 12 and a half minutes.

Led by eight first-quarter points by Lake, the Maroons netted 14-straight points to end the first frame up, 14-2. UChicago would add one more bucket – an Elizabeth Shaw layup – early in the second frame to make it 16-2 before the visitors broke the scoring drought with a free-throw at the 7:24 mark.

The Maroons didn't let up in the second frame, as the hosts' defense held Mount Mary to a 2-of-21 (9.5 percent) performance from the field and UChicago outscored the visitors 20-5 to take a commanding 34-7 advantage at halftime.

UChicago led 56-20 after three quarters, capped by a Peyton Van Soest spinning layup in a frame where the Maroons won, 22-13.

UChicago finished the game 51.6 percent (32-of-62) from the field compared to 16.3 percent (7-of-43) for the Blue Angels, and the Maroons dominated both on the boards (45-27) and in the paint (50-10). In all, the Maroons totaled 28 points off 27 Mount Mary turnovers and the UChicago bench outscored MMU 28-5.

Erica Williams scored 12 points to lead the Blue Angels (3-4), whose loss Wednesday snapped a three-game winning streak.
