Balanced Effort Sends UChicago Women's Hoops Past Elmhurst, 80-50

CHICAGO – Mia Farrell's quick fastbreak layup off the opening tip proved to be all-telling of the game to come for the host University of Chicago women's basketball team, as the No. 24 Maroons blazed to their sixth-straight win in Saturday's 80-50 decision over Elmhurst College.

Senior Taylor Lake led all scorers with 17 points – matching her season-high – and sophomore Alina Brennan chipped in 10 off the bench, draining 3-of-6 from downtown. Two Maroons had nine – Farrell (three steals) and Miranda Burt (three steals).

After Farrell's opening lay-in, UChicago (7-2) ran out to a 14-4 first-quarter lead to take control early in a game it never trailed. Lake rattled off seven-straight of her 17 points, capped by a triple at the 7:47 mark to make it 9-2, Maroons.

Senior Nireet Dhillon drained one of her two 3s a minute later to make 12-2 before Lake added another bucket in the lane to push it to 14-4 with less than five minutes gone in the game. UChicago led 22-13 after one quarter, and later a Grace Hynes layup gave the Maroons their largest lead of the half (40-18) with 3:12 to go in the second frame.

The hosts went into the locker room up, 47-23, and only continued to build their advantage in the second half leading 58-34 heading into the fourth quarter. Two Ashley Gao free throws gave UChicago its' largest lead of the game – 33 points, at 79-46 – in a contest where all 12 Maroons scored.  

The Maroons finished 39.4 percent (28-of-71) from the field and 35.3 percent (12-of-34) from behind the arc compared to 38.6 (22-of-57) and 14.3 percent (2-of-14) for the Bluejays. UChicago's defense forced Elmhurst into a game-high 22 turnovers, with the Maroons capitalizing with 21 points.

UChicago also went to the free-throw line 16 times, making 12, compared to 4-of-9 for the visitors.

Klaire Steffens led UChicago on the boards with eight and Hynes had seven to go along with her five points and five assists. Lake added four assists, two steals, and two blocks in an all-around effort and Elizbeth Shaw chipped in five points.

Kween Jean led Elmhurst (3-5) with 12 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
