CHICAGO – The University of Chicago women's basketball team will designate its Sunday, Feb. 16 home contest as a "Pediatric Cancer Awareness" game. UChicago tips off against Case Western Reserve University at 2:00 PM (CT).
The Maroons will be promoting awareness and helping raise funds for children diagnosed with pediatric cancer. The Ratner Athletics Center competition gym will feature purple and green decorations, and fans are encouraged to wear those colors in support of the event.
Online donations can be made directly to the Kelly Renee Brodnik Foundation. Kelly Brodnik – the sister of current UChicago basketball player Mallory Brodnik – passed away from pediatric osteosarcoma in 2018. The foundation seeks to help families afford the drugs necessary for patient comfort while going through cancer treatments.
"We are thrilled to be able to help promote awareness around one of the lesser understood challenges associated with pediatric cancer," said UChicago Head Coach Carissa Sain. "The Kelly Renee Brodnik Foundation raises funds to help families cover the cost of medications necessary to manage the side effects of chemotherapy or radiation. Often, these medications are not covered by insurance but are vital to helping patients cope. To do this in conjunction with remembering Kelly is special for Mallory and her family, and important to this team."
