CHICAGO – In its first conference game of the season, the University of Chicago women's lacrosse team blitzed Elmhurst College early en route to a dominating 20-1 victory on Wednesday night.
The Maroons improved to 8-1 overall and 1-0 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW). The Bluejays dropped to 1-6 overall (0-1 CCIW).
It took a mere 21 seconds for UChicago to seize the lead for good, as attacker Lally Johnson found midfielder Audrey Kaus for the opening strike. Kaus scored again 22 seconds later off a free-position shot, and the rout was on. All told, the Maroons tallied 10 goals in the first 10 minutes and led 16-0 by halftime.
UChicago converted 61 percent of their shots in the first half. With a running clock on their side, the hosts salted away the second half with constant ball control. Elmhurst's lone tally came on a backhanded shot low while twisting around the goalie circle to make it 18-1. The proved to be the only Bluejays shot of the game – the Maroons dominated the category 39-1.
The one-sided affair also featured a 21-2 advantage in draw controls. Midfielder Karina Schulze accounted for a season-high 16 draw controls herself. UChicago's defensive pressure led to 17 turnovers as Elmhurst only succeeded on two of 16 clear attempts. Ground balls were also 22-7 in the home side's favor.
Attacker Isabelle Moran paced the offense with five goals while midfielder Ali Sheehy was close behind with four tallies. Johnson handed out seven assists while scoring one herself. Schulze and Kaus posted three goals apiece. Goalkeeper Honor Crandell (8-1 record) got the win while facing one shot.
