NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The University of Chicago women's lacrosse team overcame a slow start and turned a close game into a dominant victory with a big second half in Saturday's 19-9 road win at conference foe North Central College.
The Maroons (9-1, 2-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) used a balanced team effort to score the win behind hat tricks from three different players, all first-years: Karina Schulze (two assists, nine draw controls, seven ground balls); Lally Johnson (three assists) and Audrey Kaus (assist, five draw controls).
North Central (10-2, 2-1), who reached the CCIW title game a year ago, took an early lead in the contest, striking first at the 27:50 mark behind an unassisted goal from Madeline McHugh. Two unanswered goals from first-year Abbey Pouba (Sarah Bloomquist) and Anne Sensenig would turn the momentum briefly in favor of the visitors, but that didn't last for long.
North Central's Jessica Deetjen responded by rattling off three straight goals – and the Cardinals would get one more from Annabelle Steiner – to turn the score into a 5-2 advantage for NCC at the 17:42 mark. The tide shifted for good quickly after that Cardinals' offensive flurry.
Anna Rosloniec kicked off a five-goal UChicago run, as the Maroons regained dominance in possession and capitalized: Sensenig, Ali Sheehy, Kaus, and Lally Johnson all would connect on goals, with the Sheehy and Kaus scoring on free position attempts. North Central would score twice more and Pouba and Isabelle Moran added two more for UChicago to give the Maroons a slim 9-7 lead at the break.
The second half was all Maroons, as UChicago scored the opening eight goals – three of them by Schulze and two from Kaus – of the period to take a commanding 17-7 lead with 18:14 to go. The Cardinals would muster two more scores – at 15:46 and 15:10 – before Johnson and Bloomquist would add goals of their own to create the final 19-9 score.
Rosloniec (assist), Sensenig (assist), Pouba, and Sheehy (five draw controls) each added two goals apiece for UChicago, and Moran and Bloomquist had one each.
Honor Crandell earned her ninth win of the year, stopping two shots.
UChicago dominated the shot total, 44-19 and had 15 free position shots compared to just four for the Cardinals. The Maroons were also a perfect 18-of-18 on clears, while stopping North Central (18-of-28) on 10 occasions. UChicago also won on the draw, 21-9.
