FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The University of Chicago wrestling team earned a pair of team wins at the 2018 NWCA Multi Divisional National Duals on Thursday.
The No. 17-ranked Maroons ran their record to 6-2 on the season.
The first opponent of the day was Heidelberg University. The Student Princes went ahead 15-3 after the opening four matches, with junior Louis Demarco accounting for a 3-2 win at 133 pounds. The Maroons took over from there, winning five of the last six bouts.
Sophomore Steve Bonsall got the comeback rolling with a 19-1 technical fall at 157 pounds. Next at 165 pounds, fellow sophomore Kahlan Lee-Lermer picked up a second-period pin. Sophomore Kyle Peisker scored 18 points to earn a decision win at 174, while senior Nick Ferraro edged his opponent 8-7 at 184. Heidelberg took the 197-pound match to draw within 20-18 in the team scoring. It all came down to heavyweight, where junior Patrick Mulkerin delivered with a 7-3 decision to clinch a 23-18 team victory.
UChicago next took on No. 6-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater in the bracket's Round of 16. The Warhawks came out flying with three-straight pins and rolled to a 56-0 victory.
The third dual of the day pitted the Maroons against Wilkes University. UChicago fell behind early 13-3, with Demarco providing a 2-1 win at 133. Once again, the Maroons received big contributions from the back half of the lineup by taking five of six matchups. Bonsall and Lee-Lermer posted back-to-back decisions before Wilkes scored a major of its own. With his squad trailing by eight points with three matches remaining, Ferraro stuck a pin in four minutes at 184 while junior John Jayne earned a first-period fall of his own. First-year Will Hare provided the final nail with a 4-0 shutout at heavyweight to secure a 24-17 team win for the Maroons.
The final opposing team of the day was No. 21-ranked Centenary University. The Maroons scored their opening points at 157 pounds when first-year Jason Crary received a forfeit. Two more wins came courtesy of Ferraro with a pin at 184 and Mulkerin with a 5-3 decision at heavyweight. Centenary ended up on top 27-15.
"We went to this meet with the wrestlers we had," said Head Coach Leo Kocher. "This meant some freshmen filling in one or two weight classes above what they normally wrestle. The Whitewater loss was a little disconcerting – we had a couple guys wrestling pretty tight bouts late in the match and making fatal mistakes. But we believe we grew as a team. A couple of dual meet wins and being in the top 16 puts us ahead of several here. We are looking to regroup and get some guys back in the lineup and back in weight classes where they belong."
