UChicago Wrestling Announces the Addition of Seven Recruits for 2018-19 Season

CHICAGO – University of Chicago Head Wrestling Coach Leo Kocher announced on Friday that the Maroons will add seven incoming first-year wrestlers for the 2018-19 campaign.

"For the second year in-a-row, our coaching staff has brought in a recruit class that includes wrestlers who have been nationally ranked, along with other quality wrestlers who clearly have the capability of being nationally competitive," Kocher said. "We are also enthused by the overall character of this class. These are great young men, with no sign of a 'me before the team' attitude. They will develop quickly into excellent collegiate-level athletes because they will be welcomed by a supportive squad that returns outstanding, proven talent."

The 2017-18 Maroons finished with a 10-3 dual-meet record and captured the University Athletic Association (UAA) team title. UChicago was ranked as high as 17th in the NWCA national poll during the season. Jason Crary posted a 22-9 record at 157 pounds and was named UAA Rookie of the Year before placing fifth at the NCAA Regional. He shared the team lead in wins with Kahlan Lee-Lermer (22-10), who is the defending UAA champion at 165 pounds.

Joel Andrade

  • High School: Irvington High School, N.Y.
  • Accolades: Two-time team MVP, Section Champion, New York H.S. state tournament qualifier
  • Coach Kocher: "Joel put together two 30-win seasons his junior and senior years. Joel did not pick up the sport of wrestling until he was a freshman and stilled garnered two MVPs and a Most Improved award during his career. Those are earmarks of someone who understands the relationship between hard work and success. Joel will make a difference in our lightweights."

Ryan Brown

  • High School: Lakewood Ranch High School, Fla.
  • Accolades: 183 career high school wins, two-time team MVP, two-time Florida H.S. state qualifier
  • Coach Kocher: "What caught my attention right away with Ryan was the fact that he had victories over some outstanding individuals, including high school state champions from Florida, Rhode Island, and a three-time state champion from Georgia. Those wins demonstrate a talent that will help raise the level of excellence in our program."

Zack Fattore

  • High School: Hobart High School, Ind.
  • Accolades: Placed third and fourth in the Indiana State Tournament, team MVP, team captain, senior season record of 41-1
  • Coach Kocher: "There is no doubt in my mind that Zack was the best wrestler in his weight class this past season in Indiana. In fact, I believe he is among the top 15 seniors nationally in his weight class. The composure he demonstrated in his state semifinals match when he was on the wrong end of what a newspaper headlined as a 'controversial call' speaks to Zack's poise and integrity – qualities that will take him far in wrestling and life."

Maguire Pecci

  • High School: Seton Hall Prep, N.J.
  • Accolades: New Jersey H.S. State Tournament qualifier, New Jersey National Freestyle Team, team captain
  • Coach Kocher: "Maguire qualified for the New Jersey High School State Tourney as a junior. His senior campaign was derailed largely because of injury, and Maguire missed qualifying for the state tournament by a two-point loss. We are looking forward to a fully-recovered Maguire contributing his talent and work ethic to our team this fall."

Cole Riemer

  • High School: Palatine Fremd High School, Ill.
  • Accolades: Fifth at Illinois 3A H.S. State Tournament, Illinois National Freestyle Team
  • Coach Kocher: "Illinois is certainly in the top-three high school wrestling states in the nation, so Cole's 40 wins and fifth place in our state's large high school division put him on most college coaches' radar – but he had already been on ours since dominating a nationally-ranked wrestler last summer. He is a worker."

Ben Sarasin

  • High School: Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School, Iowa
  • Accolades: Placed fourth, third and first in the Iowa 3A State Tournament, Cadet Freestyle USA Wrestling All-American, team captain
  • Coach Kocher: "Ben was ranked 14th among the nation's high school seniors in his weight class. He has had success on a national level and was undefeated and dominant throughout his final high school season – his closest match in his final high school state tournament was a 9-5 win in the championship bout."

David Traub

  • High School: Tottenville High School, N.Y.
  • Accolades: 153 high school career wins, three-time NYC Section Champ, three-time New York H.S. State Qualifier, two-time team MVP
  • Coach Kocher: "David has made a name for himself on the east coast with outstanding performances in Folkstyle, Freestyle and Greco-Roman competitions. He has earned All-American status and owns wins over state medalists from New York and Pennsylvania, as well as over All-Americans from Prep School Nationals and Greco-Roman Nationals."
