CHICAGO – The University of Chicago wrestling team defended its home turf with a perfect 3-0 record in the Maroons' annual Chicago Duals wrestling tournament, held Saturday at Henry Crown Field House.

Despite forfeiting the 184-pound weight class in all three matches, UChicago defeated Manchester (36-18), Wabash (32-17) and Mount St. Joseph (27-21) to improve to 4-1 in dual competition so far in 2018-19.

"Sending three of our wrestlers (Jason Crary, Cole Riemer and Kyle Peisker) to the Midlands Championships today stretched us a little thin, but I was proud of how the team pulled through together," Head Coach Leo Kocher said.

"In our last dual, when we gave away 12 points through forfeit and default, Pat Mulkerin stepped up and defeated a pretty good heavyweight for the match-clinching win."

Veterans Steve Bonsall (157) and Kahlan Lee-Lermer (165) had the best performances of the day, each tallying three pins. They joined rookies Ben Sarasin (174) and Maguire Pecci (149) with perfect 3-0 days, as Sarasin recorded two technical falls.

Mulkerin, competing at 285 pounds, also went a perfect 3-0 for UChicago. Other strong performances by the Maroons includes Louis DeMarco (133), who pinned his Manchester opponent in a 2-1 day, and rookie David Traub, who also finished 2-1.

At Northwestern's Midlands Championships, Riemer fell to the sixth seed from Northern Iowa in a 7-3 decision but won by medical forfeit to advance in the 149-pound consolation bracket. Peisker fell in his opening match but responded with a 16-0 tech fall win over Nathan Tausch of Cal Poly in the 174-pound consolation bracket.
