UChicago Wrestling Goes 2-2 at National Duals

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Chicago wrestling team posted a 2-2 record over the course of a grueling day of competition at the 2019 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals on Friday.

The Maroons are now 6-3 on the season in dual matches.

The morning session began with a matchup versus Centenary University. Senior Louis DeMarco provided the team's opening points with a dominating 20-3 technical fall victory at 133 pounds. The Maroons soon grabbed the lead for good by winning four of the next five matches in the middle weights. First-year Cole Reimer earned a 10-2 major decision at 149, followed by decision victories from juniors Steve Bonsall (157) and Kyle Peisker (174). Rookie Ben Sarasin provided extra breathing room with a 17-1 technical fall at 184 pounds – his fifth tech fall of the season.

Centenary pulled to within 20-15 in the team scoring with a pin at 197 pounds. But senior Patrick Mulkerin was clutch at heavyweight, winning 4-3 in extra time to clinch a 23-15 team victory.

Next on the docket was top overall seed Augsburg University, who finished as the NCAA team runner-up last season. The Auggies took the first three bouts via major decision to go up 12-0. Riemer provided three team points with his 7-5 decision at 149 to get UChicago on the board. However, Augsburg kept rolling from there, taking the remaining six matches for a 36-3 final score.

In the consolation bracket, UChicago faced off with No. 20-ranked Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The Maroons were in trouble early, trailing 12-0 after three matches. But it was a short-lived deficit. Riemer rolled over his opponent 17-3 and was immediately followed by first-period pins from Bonsall and junior Kahlan Lee-Lermer (165). Sarasin picked up a major decision of his own at 174 by a 14-4 margin. After a forfeit, UChicago put the finishing touches on the match when senior John Jayne snagged a 4-1 decision. The Maroons emerged with a narrow 23-21 victory.

The final bout of the day came against No. 9-ranked York College. UChicago forfeited two weight classes, but ended up winning five of the eight contested matches. The Maroons pulled to within 15-14 through seven weights, but a forfeit and technical fall put them too far behind down the stretch. York claimed the win 26-17.

Sophomore Alec Gleason (141), sophomore Will Britain (165), Sarasin (174) and Mulkerin (285) all claimed decision victories. Sophomore Jason Crary posted a 16-0 technical fall shutout at 157 pounds as well.

"We got the opportunity to battle against some top programs and individuals," said Head Coach Leo Kocher. "Third-ranked Steve Bonsall handled his opponents who were ranked ninth and 11th nationally in the weight class. Even in our loss to No. 1-ranked Augsburg, I thought our guys really battled. Cole Riemer defeated the No. 1 nationally-ranked wrestler for our lone win against Augsburg. But there were several notable moments – no one retreated.

"We followed the loss with a win against No. 20-ranked WPI. Then it became kind of a war of attrition. Kyle Peisker beat a wrestler ranked 14th nationally in our first dual, but he had pretty bad flu symptoms, so we sat him out for the rest of the duals. Kyle is ranked seventh in the nation, so that hurt. After Louis wrestled three duals, he was pretty banged up. With those two out, we were down 12-0 before we started with ninth-ranked York for our fourth dual. But even though our lineup in our final dual had changes from our first dual lineup in half the weight classes, they all wrestled hard. This could be a very good team before we are through."
