PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – University of Chicago's Ben Sarasin opened his sophomore season on a high note, winning the 184-poound bracket of the Wisconsin-Platteville Super 8 Tournament to lead the Maroons' wrestling team in its opener Saturday.
Sarasin, one of two Maroon returning All-Americans, won all four of his matches – two by major decision, one by sudden victory, and in the title match, a 9-5 decision over Loras' Shane Liegel.
"This is the kind of competitive experience we were looking for this early in the seaon," Head Coach Leo Kocher said. "It was a small tournament, but the progams that were present were very competitive.
"We had some good wins and some tough losses. It's good feedback for our wrestlers about where they are in their development. Grant Morrison wrestled very well considering he has not competed for 17 months. We are looking forward to getting a half a dozen guys back in the lineup that were not able to wrestle today."
Morrison recorded two pins on the day – in his first two matches – and Britain was just one point away from a title, falling in a close match in his final contest, 4-3.
