CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa & MEQUON, Wis. – The University of Chicago wrestling team divided up to compete at a pair of Saturday invitationals hosted by Concordia (Wis.) University and Coe College.
At Coe, the top placer on the day was sophomore Maguire Pecci. He captured three-straight matches to reach the title bout at 165 pounds, where he lost a 12-6 decision to Graceland University. Pecci earned wins via first-period pin, 12-2 major decision and 7-5 decision.
Senior Steve Bonsall took third place at 157 pounds. He went 3-1 on the day as well with three dominating performances. He recorded one pin in the first period before scoring a pair of technical falls (16-0 and 15-0).
At 149 pounds, UChicago accounted for another place winner with Grant Morrison. The senior ultimately took sixth in the weight class, going 3-2 overall. He recorded two decisions and a major decision.
Junior Will Hare finished seventh in the heavyweight bracket after posting a 4-2 mark. Hare wrestled in three matches that ended with a 2-1 score line, coming out on top twice. He won his seventh-place match 9-2 over his opponent from Cornell College.
First-year Wyn Veiga (0-2 record) also competed at 157 pounds.
At Concordia (Wis.), four Maroon wrestlers were in action. Senior Kahlan Lee-Lermer and junior Will Britain both went 1-2 at 165 pounds. Junior Dominick Reo posted a 2-2 record at 197 pounds, with victories by scores of 8-1 and 10-2. Senior Matt Shoub (0-2 record) saw action at 174 pounds.
