CHICAGO – In its second dual meet of the season, the University of Chicago wrestling team prevailed in eight of the 10 matches to defeat Wheaton College 40-9 on Saturday afternoon.
The Maroons evened their dual record at 1-1 while the Thunder fell to 0-2.
Six matches were wrestled on the day, as UChicago received three forfeit victories (157, 165 and 285 pounds) and Wheaton garnered one forfeit (125 pounds).
The opening action was at 133 pounds. First-year Griffin Seyfried earned a second-period pin to even up the team score at 6-6. Wheaton responded with a narrow 11-10 decision at 141 pounds.
From that point on, it was all UChicago for the remaining seven matches. Junior Alec Gleason displayed quality countering in his match at 149 pounds, emerging with an 11-5 decision. A pair of forfeits followed.
At 174 pounds, senior Kyle Peisker gained an early advantage, kept his opponent glued to the mat and racked up five minutes of riding time in a dominating 9-1 major decision.
The showcase match at 184 pounds featured undefeated sophomore Ben Sarasin against Wheaton's Isaac Odell. The two met in the previously at the Trine University Invitational, where Sarasin won 3-2. The sophomore jumped out to a nice lead on Saturday and held off Odell's third-period push to win again, 7-6. Sarasin is now 14-0 on the season.
Senior Nick Carola made fast work of his match – he scored a pin 75 seconds in for his fourth fall of the year. A heavyweight forfeit ended the day to give the Maroons a 40-9 victory.
