ELMHURST, Ill. – The University of Chicago wrestling team captured four weight-class titles en route to claiming a team title at Elmhurst College's Al Hanke Invitational on Saturday.
The Maroons topped the 12-team field with a total of 124.5 points.
Four wrestlers went undefeated on the day to win their respective weight classes. At 157 pounds, senior Steve Bonsall went 4-0 with a pair of pins. He emerged with a close 2-1 decision in the final against his opponent from Harper College. Bonsall was named the invite's Most Outstanding Wrestler at the conclusion of the day.
At heavyweight, first-year Cole Fibranz earned his first career title by going 4-0 with three pins. He secured a first-period pin in the final over University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Junior Jason Crary posted a 5-0 record to win the 165-pound title. He matched up with sophomore teammate Maguire Pecci in the championship, as Crary won via injury default. Pecci was runner-up after going 4-1.
Ben Sarasin added a fourth invitational title to his collection this season. At 184 pounds, the sophomore compiled a 3-0 record with one pin and one tech fall.
First-year Griffin Seyfried snagged second place at 133 pounds. The Maroons rookie was 2-1 with a pin.
A trio of wrestlers took third in their brackets – junior Chaise Hauck (141 pounds), senior Grant Morrison (149 pounds) and junior Will Britain (165 pounds). First-year Trent Williams also nabbed sixth place at 197 pounds, going 3-3 with two pins on the day.
