MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Chicago wrestling team got off to a strong start at day one of the NCAA Upper Midwest Regional on Friday, as the Maroons advanced six wrestlers in the brackets.
A total of 17 teams are in attendance at the two-day regional hosted by Augsburg University. Four UChicago grapplers went a perfect 2-0 on the day to reach the semifinals of their respective weight classes.
Ryan Fleck was the first wrestler through, as the rookie scored a 15-0 technical fall and a 9-4 decision at 141 pounds. Senior Steve Bonsall was similarly dominant in his opening match at 157 pounds with a 16-1 tech fall. His quarterfinal bout featured a 3-1 decision victory.
At 184 pounds, No. 2-seed Ben Sarasin made quick work of his opponents. The sophomore submitted a 19-4 tech fall and followed up with a 7-1 decision. At 285 pounds, No. 2-seed Cole Fibranz was similarly dominant with a first-period pin and a 7-0 decision.
Two Maroons remain alive in the consolation half of the bracket. First-year Griffin Seyfried went 2-1 on the day at 133 pounds. He began with a first-period pin, absorbed a narrow 3-2 loss and bounced back with an 18-2 technical fall win. At 165 pounds, junior Will Britain also captured his opener with a pin less than a minute in. The next match featured a tough 9-7 loss in overtime, but he came back in the next bout to win by fall late in the first period.
